We started this Catskill hike by Thruway to highway to road to gravel road to cow path haha. This trailhead takes some time to find. It is the southern most Tower in the Challenge.
Strapped the packs on, signed in and met Doug Hamilton a few moments later. He was coming down from his 279 trip up the mountain. He is a Catskill Mt. Fire Tower Caretaker with plenty of knowledge of the Catskills and Adirondacks. It was a pleasure to share a few moments talking with him.
The Trail is well marked with many roots and rocks but easily traveled. It is a 1.4 mile trip to the tower. We arrived to one of the most beautiful, peaceful summits we have encountered. Picnic tables, a lawn that is mowed in summer and flowers just poking there heads up to reach the sun.
The tower is well maintained and sturdy with fresh paint from last year on the tred. Gorgeous views from the top with a nice lunch made this a very memorable hike.
Dont miss the spring just below the summit and it does run all year.
