Hikers call 911 to report being struck by lightning

Just before 6 p.m. Wednesday, a person on a hiking trail called 911 to say he and his companion were struck by lightning on a trail near the Kaaterskill Falls off Laurel House Road in the Town of Tannersville, Greene County.

Several crews responded, including Tannersville Fire and Rescue, Haines Falls Fire Department, Palenville Fire Department, Forest rangers, Catskill ambulance and officials from Greene County. The victims were located about 30 minutes later.

It took almost an hour to conduct the rescue and get the hikers off the mountain. Both victims were transported to Albany Medical Center with injuries.

The extent of their injuries is unknown.
